The Sparta Lady Bulldogs came from behind to win the first set but dropped the match by losing the next two sets in their season opener at Wesclin 22-25, 25-20, 25-18 Thursday night in nonconference volleyball action.
“We didn’t play that poorly but there were numerous signs of first night jitters that showed up at the most inopportune times,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “I was encouraged with our effort on the night, now we just have to be able to be consistent with our ball handling at crunch time.”
Sparta had 86 total attacks with 29 kills. Erica Gallois and Rachel Peck accounted for 27 of that total. Gallois had 14 kills to go along with her 5 solo blocks. Senior setter, Emma Koester, contributed 24 assists during the three set match. The Lady Bulldogs were 62 of 65 serving.
Wesclin took early control jumping to an early lead. Sparta rallied from a 20-17 deficit to take the first set. Wesclin again controlled the tempo with enough hitting to keep the Bulldogs off guard.
This is the second season in a row that Wesclin has handed the Bulldogs its opening season loss. Last year the Bulldogs rallied to a 24-8 season. To do that this year they will need a good performance this weekend in the conference tourney hosted by Murphysboro High school.
Play begins around 11:15 a.m. when Sparta takes on Massac County followed with matches against Anna Jonesboro and West Frankfort.
