Lady Bulldogs win Trico Tournament without losing a set


The Sparta Lady Bulldogs  finished their impressive run through the Trico Invitational Volleyball Tournament with a 21-11, 21-12  over Marissa-Coulterville Thursday night.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and did not loss a set along the way.
Due to tie breaker rules, Steeleville slipped into the second place finish edging the Meteors and Pioneers.
In the tournament finale, all tournament team MVP Rachel Peck led the offensive attack with 11 kills while Erica Gallois also named to the all tourney team, added eight kills.  The third Bulldog named to the all tourney team was senior setter Emma Koester, she added 17 assists in the win.

In both sets, Sparta took advantage of two long service runs to pull away from sluggish starts. With the score tied at 6-6 in set one ,Erica Gallois served to a 13-6 advantage before Clarissa Richno took it from 15-7 to 20-7 before four unanswered Meteor points closed the scoring at 21-11.  In set two ,Jamie Woodworth did the damage pulling away from a 5-5 tie to take a 14-6 lead coasting to the 21-12 win. 
“We did what we needed to all week.,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “I thought the girls played hard and are still improving as the season moves along.”
Sparta gets back into River-to-River conference action with a key match at Nashville on Tuesday before coming back to Fulton Gym to host Du Quoin  Thursday.
The Bulldogs overall record improves to 11-6 after the win. 
In other action from Thursday night, Steeleville picked up two wins to improve their tournament record to 3-2.
The Lady Warriors topped Christ Our Savior 21-5, 21-3 as Jessica Troue finished with 11 kills and Brooke Rees had 19 service points.
Troue continued her good play against Trico as she added nine kills to lead her team to a 21-19, 21-13 win.
Trico rebounded from their loss to Steeleville to hand Marissa-Coulterville their first loss of the tournament 21-12, 21-19.
Leading 13-11, the Lady Pioneers used an 8-1 scoring run to end the first set with the 21-12 victory.
In set two, the Lady Pioneers were trailing 16-13 before a 5-0 scoring run gave them the lead 18-16. The Lady Meteors fought back to tie the game at 19-19, but Trico scored the final two points for the win.


Kaitlyn Phoenix finished with 10 kills and 11 blocks while Mikayla Reid added 19 assists in the win.
Trico and Marissa-Coulterville finished tournament play with 3-2  records.
In a battle of winless tournament teams, Chester knocked off Christ Our Savior 21-3, 21-9.
Tiffani Marshall led Chester with five kills and two blocks while Jamie Chambers finished with a team high six assists.
Chester improved to 7-14 overall with the win and finished tournament play with a 1-4 record.
The all tournament team consisted of Kendra Goss (Marissa-Coulterville), Kaitlyn Phoenix (Trico), Jessica Troue (Steeleville), Emma Koester (Sparta), Erica Gallois (Sparta), and MVP Rachel Peck (Sparta).
