Steeleville over Marissa-Coulterville 25-5, 25-20
Steeleville picked up an impressive conference win Tuesday night by knocking off Marissa-Coulterville in two sets, 25-5, 25-20.
“The girls played much better tonight than in recent weeks, especially since I had some major line up changes due to injuries,” said Steeleville coach Renee Rheinecker. “Some of the underclassmen really stepped up tonight and performed under pressure. If we keep playing aggressive ball, we can continue to put up wins against any team.”
Allanah Renner led the Lady Warriors with four kills, while MacKenzie Doeding and Sara Potter each added two kills in the win. Potter and Doeding each also had 11 points to lead Steeleville, while Justine Knop led the team in assists with five.
No stats for Marissa-Coulterville were available.
Sparta over Du Quoin 25-18, 25-17
Sparta defeated Du Quoin in Southern Illinois River-to-River volleyball action Tuesday night 25-18, 25-17.
In the first set, Sparta opened a 15-10 advantage only to have the Lady Indians close the gap to 15-14 before an unforced Indian hitting error allowed Sparta to stretch the lead to 19-15. Again, Du Quoin closed the gap to 19-18 only to have Sparta pull away scoring the last six for the 25-18 win.
In set two, Sparta jumped to an early lead 16-7 and never looked back while Gabby Gallois and Jannice Edmonson each had seven kills. Victoria Ward and Melissa Renner combined for 23 assists, while the team served at a 95 percent clip. The team graded out to a 1.8 passing on the match.
“’We played much better than we did the first time we played them,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “Our passing was much improved and we limited the number of unforced errors.”
Sparta improves its overall record to 16-10 heading to league leading Anna-Jonesboro Thursday night.
Trico over Zeigler-Royalton 15-25, 25-22, 25-16
After falling in set one 25-15, Trico rebounded to win the next two sets and the match over Zeigler-Royalton Monday 25-22, 25-16.
Kaylee Boland led the Lady Pioneers with 20 assists, while Ashley Modglin had 12 kills. Courtney Brandon and Kristin Myers each had six kills in the win.
Trico improved to 5-2 in conference play with the victory.
Anna-Jonesboro over Chester 25-20, 25-9
Chester dropped its third consecutive match Monday with a 25-20, 25-9 loss to Anna-Jonesboro.
Shelby Long paced Chester with nine digs.
With the loss, Chester dropped to 5-16 on the season.
