High school volleyball roundup

Lady Panthers finish conference play in second place ... 10/19/10

Pinckneyville over Sparta 25-20, 25-23
Sparta ended the volleyball regular season Tuesday with a setback losing to Pinckneyville 25-20, 25-23
By winning the two hotly contested sets, the Lady Panthers finished second in the River-to-River conference and avenged two earlier season losses to Sparta.  The two teams will meet in the Sparta Regional Thursday, October 28 at 7 p.m. which should prove to be another exciting matchup.
“When you’re on the road and playing a very evenly matched squad it’s a fine line between winning and losing and we didn’t execute well enough in just a few rotations and that was the difference,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach.
Sparta will have played Pinckneyville three of the last four matches when the two teams meet up in the first round of the regional.
The Lady Bulldogs were led in kills by senior Jessica Robinson with 11 while Victoria Ward added 12 assists.
“I thought we did a better job in the second set, but we let two good leads get away from us and put the game in the hands of fate and this time we fell a little short,” added Gerlach.
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs end the regular season at 16-16 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Valmeyer over Steeleville 25-10, 25-17
Steeleville tried to overcome some injuries but were no match for Valmeyer 25-10, 25-17 Tuesday as both teams wrapped up play in the Cahokia Conference Kaskaskia Division.
“We had a rough night to finish off conference play for the year,” said Steeleville coach Renee Rheinecker. “We were already down a few players going into tonight because of injuries and barely had enough for a team after Brooke Rees and Kassee Theobald went out early in the game. We did the best we could with what we had. People were playing in spots they don't really play and several girls played varsity for the first time. The last two weeks have been a struggle and I haven't been able to start the same lineup for two games in a row. We still managed to play a competitive second game despite the circumstances and I am proud of the girls for that.”
Alex Gale  had two kills and four digs to lead the Lady Warriors while Brooke Cates added two kills and seven digs. Brooke Woods led the team with  three points and four assists.
Marissa-Coulterville over Trico 25-21, 25-16

Nashville over Sparta 25-16, 25-15
With conference championship in hand, the Lady Hornettes showed why they are unbeaten in league play and primed for a run in the post season as they dominated the Lady Bulldogs Thursday in every phase of the match.
Sparta could only muster eight kills total, six by senior Jessica Robinson, in the match due to the net domination by Nashville.
“We were outmanned it seemed, at every corner,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “We did put together a couple of runs that made the score look respectable, however, we were kicked to the curb pretty early.”
