Du Quoin over Sparta 25-11, 25-20

The Lady Bulldogs offense sputtered and as a result Jessica Robinson lead the offense with just four kills. Julian Sroka and Gabby Gallois each added three kills in the loss.
“The inconsistencies from one night to the next really have us frustrated,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “We’ve been young before but really have not had to go through this kind of roller coaster ride of not knowing which team is going to show up for this long of time. “I have faith that we will at some time turn that corner and am able to compete every night.”
Sparta will compete in the Trico Invitational next week with five matches in three days. With the loss, Sparta’s conference record goes to 1-1 with the overall record dropping to 5-10.

Setters Victoria Ward and Melissa Renner combined for 19 assists during the two- set match. Taylor Craig and Jamie Woodworth both passed at a 1.7 clip which for the team ended at 1.4, a season high match passing mark. Ward also was 14-for-14 serving.
“We needed a match like this to get a little confidence going,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “ We played our first steady match and did a nice job in more than just one phase of the game.”
Brooke Rees finished with eight kills and two blocks for Steeleville while Brooke Cates added five kills in the loss. Natalie Ruebke and Brooke Woods led the Lady Warriors with four assists each.
“We really struggled against Sparta because of our own mistakes,” said Steeleville coach Renee Rheinecker. “We managed to pull it together to pull off the win in junior varsity, but is was a sloppy win. The varsity has got to find some consistency. I only have 14 girls all together and many of them have to play both junior varsity and varsity and I am left with very few subs on the bench. We are still working on coming up with the most efficient line up on the court.”

With the win, Sparta’s record improves to 5-9.
