The Lady Bulldogs won the title at their own volleyball invitational Saturday by knocking off Steeleville, Dupo, Trico and Marissa-Coulterville.
Sparta advanced out of pool play, downing Steeleville 25-15, 25-17 and Dupo 25-9, 25-13.
Sparta moved on out of its pool to defeat Trico 25-15, 25-10 to advance to the championship match with Marissa-Coulterville. The Lady Bulldogs prevailed in a three set match, winning 23-25, 25-17, 15-11.
“We didn’t do anything flashy, we just played steady and played within ourselves,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “I’m really proud of the effort today.”
Jannice Edmonson and Jessica Robinson had nine and eight kills, respectively, in the Steeleville match. Victoria Ward was a perfect 14-for-14 serving to go along with 10 assists.
In the second match of the day for the Bulldogs against Dupo, Robinson led with 10 kills, while Mikaela Crabtree went 22-for-22 from the service line.
In the afternoon semifinal against Trico, Robinson stepped up with a 12-kill match, while Taylor Craig went 11-for-11 serving as the Lady Bulldogs advanced to play in the championship.
In the final match of the day, Sparta stayed steady at the service line behind Ward’s 10-for-10 and Craig's 20-for-20 serving performances. Robinson finished with 18 kills in the match and 48 kills in the tournament.
Named to the all-tournament team were Shannon Hood (Dupo), Molly Works (New Athens), Beth Daniels and Amie Conway (Trico), Brooke Rees (Steeleville), Kendra Goss and Camille Bumann (Marissa-Coulterville), Victoria Ward, Jamie Woodworth and Jessica Robinson (Sparta).
Other match scores were Steeleville over Dupo 25-16, 22-25, 15-7; New Athens over Dupo 25-12, 25-11; Marissa-Coulterville over Trico 25-16, 25-20; New Athens over Marissa-Coulterville 27-25, 26-24; Trico over New Athens 25-17, 25-21; Marissa-Coulterville over Steeleville 25-15, 26-24 and Trico over Steeleville 21-25, 25-16, 15-12.
Trico finished the tournament in third place. Daniels finished the day with 30 kills, while Kristin Myers added 20. Conway finished the tournament with 34 assists, while Kylie Rodriguez added 29 digs followed by Courtney Brandon with 27 digs and Kourtney Bunselmeyer with 25 digs.
Statistics for Steeleville and Marissa-Coulterville were not available.
