Nashville 0
A big first inning for Sparta helped propel the softball team to an 8-0 shutout victory over Nashville Tuesday.
Shanell Roberts connected on one of her two home runs in the first inning after Taylor Martin and Julian Sroka reached on two-out walks for an early 3-0 lead. Corrie Opolka followed the home run with a double and scored the fourth run of the inning on Alexis Kohrs’ single.
Roberts connected on her second home run in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning. Kohrs led off the inning reaching base on a hit by pitch. Allie Valleroy singled and Opolka came around to score the sixth run on a two-out double by Jamie Woodworth. Sparta scored two runs in the sixth inning to put the final score on the board.
Alexis Kohrs picked up the no-hit win striking out six while walking three to push her personal record to 5-2 while the overall team record goes to 11-2.
“To come back the way we did last night against Pinckneyville really carried over into a nice win at a pretty tough place to win today,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “Shanell really put a charge into the offense with those two homers and what can you say when a freshman pitcher tosses a no-hitter on the road like Alexis did tonight. I’m really happy with the way we are playing right now.”
Red Bud 5
Gibault 4
Red Bud scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge past Gibault 5-4 Monday.
Gibault opened up the scoring with a single run in the top of the second before Red Bud answered back with two runs in the fourth.
Gibault reclaimed the lead with two runs in the sixth, but the Lady Musketeers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a lone tally.
In extra innings, Gibault took a one-run lead by scoring in the top of the ninth before Red Bud stole the win at home.
Tara Hubert tossed all nine innings allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out three for the win. Hubert was also one-for-two from the plate with two runs batted in
The Red Bud attack was paced by Tori Albert (2-for-5 with two RBIs), Dany Gargac (2-for-5 with an RBI) and Bianca Durbin (2-for-4 with a run scored).
Sparta 7
Chester 1
Sparta scored three runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 7-1 win Friday in conference softball action.
Julian Sroka went the distance for the Lady Bulldogs striking out three while walking two to get the win.
Taylor Martin started the scoring in the first inning with a two out hit by pitch followed by a single by Sroka. Both were able to score because the inning continued when Shanell Roberts reached base on a dropped third strike. Corrie Opolka then pushed two across on a two-out double to left field.
“We did a nice job of taking advantage of the first inning opportunity,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach.”
Jamie Woodworh, Sroka and Opolka all had multiple hit games for Sparta as the team added single tallies in the third and the fifth for a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Lady Jackets scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth as Ashley Andrews picked up the RBI. Sparta added two more runs in the sixth for the six-point decision.
Morgan Colvis took the loss for Chester, while Andrews finished 3-for-3 on the day.
Red Bud 7
Okawville 6
Red Bud overcame an early four-run deficit to knock off Okawville 7-6 Friday in a nonconference softball affair.
Each team scored lone runs in the first inning but Okawville tallied four more in the top of the second for a commanding 5-1 lead.
The Lady Musketeers rallied off six unanswered runs scoring two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth. Okawville added its last run in the sixth.
Ciara Schaefer tossed all seven inning allowing six runs on 10 hits to notch the win.
Dany Gargac was 1-for-1 with a three-run home run to pace the Red Bud offense while Amy Koester was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Bianca Durbin was 2-for-3 and Jessica Snyder was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Marissa-Coulterville 7
Dupo 3
Marissa-Coulterville snapped a three-game losing streak by topping Dupo 7-3 Thursday.
The Lady Meteors scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Marissa-Coulterville took the lead for good in the second by scoring six runs.
Dupo added a lone tally in the third and Marissa-Coulterville added another run in the fourth for the four-run conference win.
Ashley Lehman picked up the win going all seven innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four. She also drove in two runs on one hit.
Kendra Goss went 2-for-4 from the plate and Bailey Setzkorn was 1-for-1 with two RBIs for the Lady Meteors.
