Lady Warriors notch first win of volleyball season

The Steeleville Lady Warriors notched their first win of the season with a straight set victory over Red Bud 21-18, 21-14 Thursday in the Marissa/New Athens Labor Day Volleyball Tournament.
“It was great leaving this tournament with a win,” said Steeleville coach Amy Brown. “We stopped Red Bud from going on any scoring runs which is something we didn't do against Gibault or Murphysboro the previous night.  In the first set, Brooke Rees has some key kills and scored four points in a row to build us a lead.  The second set we were head-to-head with Red Bud, and then Brooke Cates really stepped up her serving getting us five points, which included two aces as we built our lead to 20-12.  I’m proud of our girls in the way they bounced back from two difficult losses.  This team is showing real promise and I’m looking forward to getting the season underway.”
Leading the Steeleville offense was Jessie Husband (five points with two aces, 10 assists, and three digs), Rees (five points, six kills, and seven digs), Jenny Frederking (three kills and six digs), and Cates (five points with two aces and six digs).
With the win, Steeleville improved to 1-2 on the season.
