Carbondale 1
Sparta improved to 6-0 on the season with a 10-1 victory over Carbondale Tuesday in prep softball action.
Sparta Freshman Alexis Kohrs went the distance striking out nine to pick up the win, while the offense slammed out 10 runs on 13 hits to blow the game wide open.
The Lady Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning on a two out throwing error by the Terrier pitcher. Carbondale answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the first on two infield errors by the Bulldogs. The defense tightened while the offense started producing runs in each inning after the second to stretch the lead to 10-1 in the nonconference contest.
Jade Vaughn led the offense with a 4-for-4 day at the plate with two stolen bases, her career best day as a Lady Bulldog. Corrie Opolka, Taylor Martin, Shanell Roberts and Kohrs all had multiple hit days while Julian Sroka added a single in the fourth inning.
“I’m really happy with the way we regrouped and played pretty solid after that opening inning,” Sparta coach Roger Gerlach commented. “We did a nice job of putting the ball in play and made them make some plays.”
Sparta hosts Trico Thursday.
Pinckneyville 4
Trico 1
Pinckneyville scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to escape past Trico Monday at home 4-1.
With the win, Pinckneyville improved to 10-0 on the season.
Emily Chapman picked up the win, while the Lady Panther offense was led by Courtney Crawford (2-for-4 with an RBI) and Mo Ramsey (1-for-4 with two RBI).
Trico junior Makayla Hartmann got the loss as she pitched all seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits. Jennifer McGill was 1-for-2 with a run batted in and Katie Taylor was 2-for-4 to lead the Lady Pioneer attack.
Chester 7
Shawnee 3
Chester picked up its first win of the season with a 7-3 victory over Shawnee on the road Monday.
The Lady Jackets wasted little time taking the lead scoring two runs in the first inning.
After Shawnee scored a lone tally in the bottom half of the first, Chester took total control of the game scoring a run in the second and two more in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
Shawnee scored lone runs in the sixth and seventh, but Chester also added two more runs in the seventh for the four-run decision.
Ashley Andrew was the offensive star of the game as she went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in. Mollie Laramore was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Megan Atchison was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the win

Morgan Colvis picked up the win as she went all seven innings allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out 11 and walking just one.
The Lady Jackets improved to 1-2 on the season with the win.
Red Bud 11
Granite City 2
Red Bud notched its second consecutive win of the season with a convincing 11-2 victory over Granite City Monday.
Jessica Snyder went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two extra base hits and one run scored to lead the Red Bud offense.
With the win, Red Bud improved to 2-2 on the season.
Gibault 11
Marissa-Coulterville 0
Gibault earned the doubleheader split Saturday by cranking out 11 runs on 15 hits for an 11-0 victory over Marissa-Coulterville.
Bailey Setzkorn received the loss for the Lady Meteors as she allowed seven runs on eight hits with one walk while striking out two.
Camille Bumann was 2-for-2 from the plate to lead the Marissa-Coulterville offense, while Abbie Lehmen, Setzkorn and Sonnie Young each had a hit as well in the loss.
With the loss, Marissa-Coulterville dropped to 5-2 overall.
Marissa-Coulterville 4
Gibault 3
Marissa-Coulterville rallied from a two run first inning deficit to edge Gibault 4-3 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Lady Meteors got on the scoreboard with a run in the third inning and then took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth. Gibault added a lone run in the bottom half of the fourth, but were held off the rest of the way.
Ashley Lehmen picked up the win as she tossed all seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out two.
Camille Bumann and Sonnie Young each had a hit and a run batted in to pace the Marissa-Coulterville offense.
With the win, the Lady Meteors improved to 5-1 on the season.
Sparta 8
Elverado 1
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and cruise to an 8-1 win over visiting Elverado in nonconference softball action Wednesday.
The first four Sparta hitters reached and scored in the first inning, while Alexis Kohrs recorded seven strikeouts to go along with just three walks en-route to the seven-run victory.
Jamie Woodworth, Taylor Martin and Julian Sroka turned in multiple hit days while Alexis Kohrs, Shanell Roberts and Jade Vaughn also tallied hits during the win.
Sparta tacked on a single tally in the second and three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
“We did a better job at the plate and base running today than in our first outing,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “We had a lot better understanding of the importance of every at bat.”
Sparta improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Red Bud 7
Belleville Althoff 3
Bianca Durbin hit a home run and drove in four runs to lead Red Bud past Althoff 7-3 Wednesday.
Andrea Hartmann picked up the win as she went all seven innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four.
Tori Albert added two hits with an RBI while Amy Koester and Lora Tindall each had a hit and a run driven in.
The win was Red Bud’s first of the year.
Pinckneyville 6
Hamilton County 3
Pinckneyville rallied from a 3-0 deficit to keep its record perfect with a 6-3 win in nine innings at Hamilton County Wednesday.
Hamilton County scored a lone run in the third and two runs in the fifth for the early lead.
The comeback started in the top of the sixth as Taylor Cicardi scored with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 3-1.
In the seventh, Cicardi hit a two-run home run to tie the game and force extra innings.
Pinckneyville put the game away in the ninth by scoring three runs on two hits and an error.
Sara Malanowski picked up the win as she allowed no runs on just two hits, while striking out six in her three innings pitched in relief of starter Emily Chapman.
“Hamilton County is a pretty good team,” said Pinckneyville coach Greg Hale. “We had a lot of chances to score and didn’t take advantage in the early innings. We showed signs of a good team as we found a way to score in the seventh and push to extra innings. Taylor Cicardi had a clutch home run to tie the game with one on and one out in the seventh. Emily Chapman pitched probably her best game so far this year. Sara Malanowski came in and was very sharp in relief probably pitching her best this year.
Cicardi was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Pinckneyville offense, while Mo Ramsey and Kortney Crawford were both 2-for-4 with a run driven in.
Marissa-Coulterville 10
Chester 0
Marissa-Coulterville freshman pitched a five inning shutout allowing just two hits while striking out six to lead her squad to a 10-0 win over Chester Wednesday.
The Lady Meteors scored four runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth for the short game victory.
Sonnie Young drove in three runs while Paige Phelps knocked home two runners to lead the Marissa-Coulterville offense.
Camille Bumann, Corey Pitchford and Bailey Setzkorn each had an RBI as well for the Lady Meteors.
With the win, Marissa-Coulterville improved to 4-1 on the season, Chester fell to 0-2.
