Girls softball roundup - Conference action gets started ... 4/5/11

Red Bud 4, Breese Central 2
Tara Hubert earned the complete game victory picking up seven strikeouts, as Red Bud nipped Breese Central 4-2 Tuesday in Cahokia Conference Mississippi Division action.
With the game tied 1-1, the Lady Musketeers took the lead for good scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Lauren Horrell had two hits and drove in a run to pace the Red Bud offense. Dany Gargac and Andrea Hartmann each had a double and a RBI.
Lebanon 1, Marissa-Coulterville 0
Lebanon scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning in a 1-0 victory over Marissa-Coulterville Tuesday.
The game was the conference opener for both teams.
Ashley Lehman took the loss despite allowing the lone run on just four hits over seven innings of work.
The Lady Meteor offense was held to three hits, as Corey Pitchford, Courtney Bingel and Abbie Lehman all had a single in the loss.
Anna-Jonesboro 1, Sparta 0
In the conference opener for both teams, Anna-Jonesboro scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge Sparta 1-0 Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs had chances to score in the game, as they had runners at third base with less than two out on three different occasions but could not get the run home.
“Give credit to the AJ pitcher, she made some pitches when she had to, and we were a little overanxious in those situations,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “I still liked our chances and we were in position to win, we just didn’t execute the way I know we can. Just have to tip your hat and move on.”
Alexis Kohrs was the tough luck loser in the pitchers battle, as she had six strikeouts with just one walk.  She also had one of the five hits the Bulldog offense garnered. Jamie Woodworth, Corrie Opolka and Julian Sroka are the others to get singles while Jade Vaughn was the only extra base hit which was a triple to lead off the sixth inning.
Sparta could not push Vaughn across in that sixth inning and that would come back and haunt the efforts for the upset win. An infield pop-up for the first out, followed by an infield hit that Vaughn could not score on, and two strikeouts ended the inning.
“With the sixth inning to get away from us like that really changed the momentum and most likely the outcome of the game,” added Gerlach. “I did think that we competed well, and in the nine remaining games in league play, we need to be ready for extra innings in almost half of them, that is how solid our league is this year with three teams ranked in state.”
Sparta hosts state ranked league foe Carterville Friday. With the loss, Sparta’s overall record drops to 6-1.
Breese Central 5, Marissa-Coulterville 3
Marissa-Coulterville fell behind 4-0 in the first couple of innings and couldn’t complete the rally in the second game of a double header against Breese Central.

Sparta 4, Okawville 3
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, Sparta reclaimed the lead for good with three runs in the bottom half of the frame en route to a 4-3 victory over Okawville Wednesday.
Okawville broke on top scoring a single run in the top half of the first inning on three first inning hits by the Rockets. Sparta responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning with the big hit being a three-run home run by Shanell Roberts. Jamie Woodworth had reached on a leadoff double and Julian Sroka was walked before the Roberts blast.
Sroka scored another run in the bottom of the sixth to take what looked like a commanding 4-1 lead when she reached on a single up the middle and later scored on a passed ball.
That fourth run ended up being the game-to-back singles to start the inning before an infield error and two consecutive walks put the Sparta lead in jeopardy.
Two strikeouts by Alexis Kohrs, who came in relief, put the game away saving the win for Sroka, who went 6 plus innings to pick up her second win of the season.
“I think these kinds of games show the importance of those tack-on runs that seem innocent in the early innings prove just as valuable later,” said Sparta coach Roger Gerlach. “Shanell again came up with some big RBIs early and I was really impressed with how Alexis closed the door in the seventh.”
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-0 with the win.
