Former longtime track coach at Chester, Jack Herschback was named an honorary referee for the 2010 girls state track and field meet held May 20-22.
Herschback spent the majority of his 33-year teaching career at Chester. He coached track and field for 27 years as a head boys track coach, while also coaching girls track and field over the last 15 years of that stretch.
Herschback’s accomplishments as a track coach include a pair of boys sectional titles at Chester in 1998 and 1999.
He has combined to work over 50 IHSA boys and girls track and field state finals as an official, including his 23rd girls meet in 2010. Herschback served in a variety of roles, including as a high jump official. He also previously served the IHSA as a member of the track and field advisory committee, serving a three-year term.
Herschback also serves as a collegiate track and field official, as he is a high jump official at home meets for Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
