Sparta’s Taylor Martin wrapped up her prep golf career with a 12th place finish at the Class A girls state tournament held Friday and Saturday at Crab Orchard Golf Club in Carterville.
Martin shot a 175, just 12 strokes behind state champion Tala Mumford of Massac County (163).
Massac County also won the team state title followed by Bloomington Central Catholic, Petersburg (PORTA), Champaign St. Thomas More, Harrisburg and Effingham St. Anthony.
Other local golfers who advanced to the state tournament included, Pinckneyville freshman Heather McDaniel who shot a 191 to take 35th overall, and Steeleville’s Chelsea Nagel who carded a 206 to finish 60th.
In the Class A boys state tournament, Sparta’s Kaleb Kessler shot a 164 to tie for 46th place. Shane Convery of Raymond Lincolnwood shot a 144 to win the individual state title.
Effingham St. Anthony won the team title followed by Mt. Carmel, Rockford Lutheran, Winnetka North Shore Country Day, Catlin and Benton.
The boys state tournament was held Friday and Saturday at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.
