Jones, Kessler and McDaniel advance to state golf finals ... 10/11/11



Three area golfers punched their tickets Monday and Tuesday for the state finals.
In the boys competition, Marissa-Coulterville’s Tyler Jones was the lone area qualifier to advance out of the Carlyle Sectional held at Governor’s Run Golf Course.
Jones, a sophomore, shot a 79 to advance as an individual. Parker Lawrence, a senior from Breese Mater Dei, shot a 71 to win the individual title.
Nashville as a team shot a 313 to win the team title followed by Hamilton County (319), Effingham St. Anthony (320), Carmi-White County (332), Breese Mater Dei (334), Woodlawn (334), Alton Marquette (340), Carlyle (344), Red Bud (348), Marissa-Coulterville (358), Newton (372) and Goreville (374).
The top three teams advance to the state finals along with the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team.
Jones will compete in the boys golf state finals October 14 and 15 at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.
On the girls side, Pinckneyville junior Heather McDaniel and Sparta sophomore Kendra Kessler each advanced out of the Carterville Sectional Tuesday held at Crab Orchard Golf Course.
McDaniel shot an 80, while Kessler carded an 82. Jessa Handwerk, a senior from Harrisburg won the sectional title with a 74.
Nashville won the team title with a 355 followed by Massac County (368), Okawville (369). Highland (370), Eldorado (374), Althoff (383), Mt. Carmel (399), Effingham St. Anthony (400), Anna-Jonesboro (406), Carmi-White County (427), Civic Memorial (443) and Staunton (508).
McDaniel shot an 81, while Kessler shot an 88 October 5 at the Pinckneyville Regional to advance to the Sectional. Olivia Mathis, a junior from Pinckneyville, shot an 87 to also qualify for the sectional but did not advance to the state meet.
Shawn Rennegarbe, a Nashville sophomore, shot a 69 to win the regional title, while her team cruised to the title by 18-strokes. Althoff took second with a team score of 355 followed by Okawville (360), Freeburg (375), Pinckneyville (378), Columbia (382), Waterloo (389), Red Bud (400), Sparta (460), Marissa-Coulterville (467), Mater Dei (486) and Sandoval (492).
At the Anna-Jonesboro Regional, Trico junior Katie Garver qualified to the sectional with an 88. However, she did not get past the sectional round.
Massac County won the regional title with a 347 followed by Eldorado (362), Anna-Jonesboro (396), Carterville (399), Herrin (426), Harrisburg (470), West Frankfort (472), Trico (486), Vienna (488), Steeleville (509) and Johnston City (558). Chester and Goreville also competed but did not have enough golfers for a team score.
