Chelsea Nagel’s round of 88 got her a regional title and helped her team, the Steeleville Lady Warriors, to a second place finish at the Freeburg Girls Golf Regional Wednesday held at The Orchards.
Nagel topped Freeburg’s Abby Bergkoetter by one stroke to win the regional medal with the lowest individual round of the regional.
“I was so excited when I found out that I won, that I ran over to hug Coach (Valerie) Bohnert,” said Nagel. “The whole team got together and took a bunch of pictures. It was one of my better scores of the year and I’m glad I was able to shoot it on regional day.”
Freeburg won the team title with a low score of 371 followed by Steeleville (423), Anna-Jonesboro (424), Pinckneyville (427), Sparta (444), Red Bud (448) and Trico (474).
Freeburg, Steeleville and Anna-Jonesboro all advance to the Anna-Jonesboro Sectional.
“I am nervous about sectionals, but I am also excited,” added Nagel. “I have been working hard my entire senior year and I am just excited that my team gets to go compete with me.”
Also contributing for Steeleville were Rachel Duensing (107), Jill Winkelman (113), Natalie Ruebke (115), Kaitlynn Tretter (139) and Alyssa Diercks (159).
Other local golfers who qualified for sectionals as individuals included Taylor Martin of Sparta (94), Kelsey Cicardi of Pinckneyville (98), Kaytie Taylor of Trico (99), Olivia Mathis of Pinckneyville (100), Heather McDaniel of Pinckneyville (105), Andrea Hartmann of Red Bud (106) and Bianca Durbin of Red Bud (109).
