Lady Meteors edge Sesser-Valier for tournament title ... 1/9/10

Trico takes third, Chester wins consolation championship

Marissa-Coulterville needed overtime, but came away with its first Lady Jacket Mid Winter Classic title Saturday with a win over Sesser-Valier.
Trico avenged an earlier loss to Elverado by knocking off the Lady Falcons to take home third place.
Chester picked up two wins Saturday to claim the consolation championship.

Sesser-Valier 47
If basketball games were scored by how many minutes you were in the lead, Marissa-Coulterville would have lost to Sesser-Valier 31-1 in the championship game.
However, in all reality it was the Lady Meteors’ ability to rebound from a big early deficit to take the lead late and win the title in overtime.
“It took us awhile to get used to their defensive pressure,” said Marissa-Coulterville coach Dan Lehmen. “We couldn’t get anything going in the first quarter and Sesser-Valier did a good job of stopping what we wanted to do.”
It was a role-reversal for Marissa-Coulterville in the first quarter. The Lady Meteors were full-court pressing everyone into numerous turnovers in the first couple of rounds of the tournament, but Saturday night, they were 1-of-6 from the field with eight turnovers as Sesser-Valier’s press gave them fits.
The Lady Devils were hot to start the game, making 7-of-12 shots for a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“Sesser-Valier has some very good guards and they take care of the ball,” said Lehmen. “We didn’t think we could press them effectively, but if we would have gotten anymore behind we would of had to.”
The Lady Meteors got right back into the game by scoring the first six points of the second quarter.
Brittany Sloan had eight points in the second quarter as Marissa-Coulterville outscored Sesser-Valier 17-9 to trail only 25-22 at halftime.
Each team scored nine points in the third quarter as Sesser-Valier couldn’t pull away and Marissa-Coulterville couldn’t gain any more ground.
A 4-0 run to start the quarter gave Sesser-Valier a seven-point lead, 38-31, but Chelsea Weekley was able to ignite an 11-3 run by the Lady Meteors with a traditional three-point play to give her team their first lead of the game 42-41 after a Dena Malkin layup with 1:27 left in the game.
Sesser-Valier, who turned the ball over 11 times in the fourth quarter, had a chance to tie the game after Wine hit 1-of-2 free throws with 15.6 seconds remaining.
The Lady Devils missed their first shot, but Lorena Marlo made good with the second chance to send the game into overtime with the game tied at 43-43.
In the extra session, Sesser-Valier scored the first four points to take control, but Marissa-Coulterville responded with an 9-0 run to end the game with the 52-47 win.
Wine led Marissa-Coulterville with 11 points and was named tournament most valuable player.
“Kara has really stepped it up for us these past couple of weeks,” added Lehmen. “When she plays well, we usually do well. She was in some foul trouble tonight, but she is smart enough to stay in the game and she made some big plays for us late in the game.”
Sloan finished with 10 points and Weekley added nine in the win.
Teammates Dena Malkin and Kendra Goss, who did most of her damage in the first two rounds of play, were also selected to the all-tournament team.
The all-tournament team also consisted of Chelsea Cochran (Elverado), Beth Daniels (Trico), Shelly Lyons (Chester), Hilary Best (Chester), Ashley Slack (Sesser-Valier), Chelsea Jarrett (Trico) and Lorena Marlo (Sesser-Valier).
Trico 43
Elverado 31
Beth Daniels, Stephanie Cochran and Rebecca Dilday stepped up in Chelsea Jarrett’s absence to lead Trico to a 43-31 victory over Elverado to win third place in the Chester tournament.
Daniels and Cochran combined to score 30 points with 17 and 13 respectively in the win.
“Beth and Stephanie really stepped up big tonight and played well,” said Trico coach Steve Vogt. “With Chelsea not playing due to an injury, we needed those two to come up big tonight and they did. Rebecca Dilday also played very hard and got us some big buckets in the third quarter.”
Trico got off to a fast start as Daniels scored six points to spark a 9-0 run to open the game. Elverado made just 1-of-12 shots in the quarter and trailed 12-4.
The Lady Pioneers couldn’t keep the momentum going in the second as they made just 1-of-10 shots while turning the ball over nine times as Elverado outscored them 8-3 to trail just 15-12 at halftime.
Elverado opened the second half with a 5-0 run to claim its first lead of the game 17-16.
It didn’t take Trico long to respond and the team outscored Elverado 14-5 throughout the rest of the third quarter for an eight-point lead, 30-22. Cochran and Dilday each had six points in the frame to pace Trico’s attack.
Daniels tossed in six more points early in the fourth quarter as a 9-2 scoring run put the game out of reach for Trico.
“With the way we struggled early in the season, taking third place in this tournament was huge,” added Vogt. “This was a positive win for us and definitely a step in the right direction.
Chester 43
New Athens 39
Chester notched its second win of the day Saturday to double its season’s total coming into tournament play with a 43-39 victory over New Athens to win the consolation championship.
Trailing 22-20 at halftime, the Lady Jackets outscored New Athens 23-17 in the second half for the narrow four-point win.
Chester’s defense made the difference early forcing 10 turnovers, but the Lady Jackets were only 3-of-19 from the floor in the first quarter. Ariel Gales scored on an offensive rebound put-back as the first quarter buzzer sounded to give Chester a slim 11-9 lead.
It was Chester that had trouble taking care of the ball in the second quarter, committing 13 turnovers as New Athens outscored the team 13-9 for a 22-20 lead at the intermission.
Hilary Best had five points in the quarter for Chester to keep her team close.
Best and Lyons scored six and four points respectively in the third quarter to spark a 10-3 scoring run to finish off the period up 36-32.
New Athens cut the lead down to two puts twice in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get any closer as each team scored seven points in the frame as Chester held on for the consolation title.
Best finished with a game high 17 points to pace the Chester offense.

Agape Christian 20
Chester snapped its 11-game losing streak Saturday morning with its best performance of the season in a 69-20 win over Agape Christian in the tournament consolation semifinals.
The Lady Jackets outscored Agape 24-8 in the first and 17-5 in the second for a commanding 41-13 halftime lead.
Chester put the game out of reach in the second half by outscoring the Lady Knights 22-7 in the third and 6-0 in the fourth.
Shelly Lyons led the Chester scoring attack with 14 points, while Jade Jolly and Hilary Best each had 10.
With the win, Chester advanced to the consolation finals to face New Athens.
Sesser-Valier 49
Trico 34
Sesser-Valier outscored Trico 14-4 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 49-34 win Friday night in the semifinals.
While Sesser-Valier led from start to finish, the Lady Pioneers rallied from a big early deficit and had changes in the second quarter to take the lead.
The Lady Devils’ full-court pressure gave Trico a lot of trouble in the opening quarter as the team committed 13 turnovers and fell behind 10-2.
Trico’s defense kept the team in it early on as Sesser-Valier was just 7-of-17 from the field, while the Lady Pioneers were 5-of-7 to trail just 16-11 at the end of the first period.
Trico cut Sesser’s lead to one point on three occasions, but couldn’t get any closer as the Lady Devils finished off the first half with a 7-2 scoring run for a 27-21 lead.
The inside play of Chelsea Jarrett and Stephanie Cochran was the reason Trico was able to get back in the game as each player had four points in the second quarter. Trico could have gotten even closer to taking the lead in the period, but went 0-for-5 from the foul line.
Sesser-Valier grabbed the momentum early in the second half with  4-0 run to push its lead up to 10 points, 31-21.
Jarrett was unstoppable in the third quarter, scoring eight points to ignite a 9-4 run by the Lady Pioneers to trail only 35-30 at the end of the quarter.
Trico’s offense couldn’t keep up the pace in the fourth. The team went 2-of-10 from the floor with four turnovers as Sesser-Valier used a 14-4 run to secure the win and its spot in the tournament’s championship game.
Jarrett finished with 17, while Cochran had six for Trico.
Marissa-Coulterville 53
Elverado 15
Marissa-Coulterville’s full-court trapping press forced Elverado to turn the ball over 34 times in the game as the Lady Meteors coasted to a 53-15 victory Friday night in the tournament semifinals.
“Our defense was much better tonight,” said Lady Meteors  coach Dan Lehmen. “We emphasized on keeping other teams out of the lane and we were successful on doing that tonight.”
The Lady Meteors grabbed the lead from the start as Paige Phelps tossed in five points and Kara Wine added four in the opening quarter for a 13-4 advantage. Elverado had eight turnovers in the opening frame as Marissa-Coulterville was off and running.
The Lady Meteors defense posted a shutout in the second quarter, outscoring Elverado 18-0 for a 31-4 lead at halftime. The four-point first half broke a tournament for futility.
Wine and Camille Bumann led the Marissa-Coulterville offense in the second quarter with nine and six points respectively. Elverado had 15 turnovers in the second quarter and just four shots from the field.
Marissa-Coulterville cooled down a little bit in the third quarter as the team made just 4-of-15 shots, but still managed to outscore Elverado 10-6 to increases its lead to 31 points, 41-10.
Marissa-Coulterville sophomore Kendra Goss scored eight points in the fourth quarter to spark a 12-5 run to finish the game off with the 53-15 victory to advance to the finals of the Lady Jacket Mid Winter Classic.
Wine finished with a game high 18 points, while Goss added nine and Bumann had eight.
