“We didn't come out of the gates very well tonight, either offensively or defensively,” said Pinckneyville coach Alan Engelhardt. “Benton really bothered us with their physicality, and early on, they out-hustled us up and down the floor. At halftime we talked about the third quarter showing what kind of character we have, and after giving up a three-pointer on Benton's first possession to fall behind by 17, we really started to battle.”
“We played pretty poised in overtime, getting good shots at the rim and getting to the foul line, while really limiting what Benton could do offensively,” added Engelhardt. “Heather McDaniel had her best game of the season on both ends of the floor tonight, really doing a job of keeping Mendez in front of her and handling the pressure on offense as well as hitting the two big threes.
“Katelyn Mayer had a tougher night shooting the ball, but she still worked to come away with 17 points and hit a big three to tie the game with a couple of minutes to play. Haley Simpson did a tremendous job of limiting Morgan Corn's touches in the second half and overtime after a rough first half. And Lindsey Winter was solid all-around, dishing out six assists and pulling down six rebounds. We have shown that we can put together some very good stretches, now we have to figure out how to do that for 32 minutes.”
With the win, Pinckneyville improved to 5-1 on the season.
