The Pinckneyville Lady Panthers outscored Sesser-Valier in every quarter, including 20-4 in the third, to run away with a 67-31 victory Saturday in the West Frankfort Mid Winter Classic. With the victory, Pinckneyville finished tournament play with a 2-1 record and won the championship. The title was decided on free throw percentage since Herrin, West Frankfort and Pinckneyville all finished with a 2-1 record. “It was nice to see the girls bounce back like they did tonight,” said Pinckneyville coach Alan Engelhardt. “We had gotten after the girls pretty good the last couple of days after losing to West Frankfort, and they came out and showed how they were capable of playing again tonight. I was also very happy that we only committed eight turnovers on the night. When we look to score and don't turn the ball over, we can do some things very well offensively. We played at our tempo and defended the ball well on the perimeter; those are the cornerstones of our team, and we did a great job of executing in those two areas.” Taylor Cicardi led the Lady Panthers with 23 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Maddy Keith added 17 points and was also selected to the all tournament team. With the win, Pinckneyville improved to 18-5 overall.
