Pinckneyville 57, Carlyle 56
Pinckneyville jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter but had to hold off a late Carlyle rally for a 57-56 victory Tuesday night in nonconference girls basketball action.
“We stopped attacking and looked like we just wanted to hang on,” said Pinckneyville coach Alan Engelhardt. “We were still getting the ball into the middle of the zone, but instead of getting the ball to the rim, the way we had in the first half, we just looked to unload the ball back outside. I thought we allowed our struggles on offense to carry over to defense, giving up 33 second half points and allowing their posts, who we had held scoreless in the first half, to score 16 points. We found ourselves trailing 56-51 with under 40 seconds to play when Maddy Keith hit a big three and then got a deflection on the in-bounds which we recovered. Maddy then threw a skip pass over the top to Mo Ramsey who hit another three to put us up 57-56.”
