Chester, Marissa-Coulterville, Trico all notch opening round wins at Chester ... 1/4/11


After two days of the fifth annual Chester Lady Jacket Mid Winter Classic basketball tournament, Sesser-Valier, Trico, Marissa-Coulterville and Chester have all advanced to the semifinals.
Chester 39, Dupo 33
Chester scored the first 17 points of the game and held Dupo to no points in the opening quarter, but had to hold on late for a 39-33 decision Tuesday night.
Hilary Best scored six points in the opening frame for the Lady Jackets, while Dupo went 0-for-11 from the field and turned the ball over 11 times for the 17-0 deficit.
Chester went cold in the second quarter making just 1-of-11 shots as Dupo got back in the game outscoring the Lady Jackets 8-2. At the end of the first half, Chester led 19-8.
Dupo continued to battle in the second half outscoring Chester 10-5 in the third and 20-10 in the fourth. However, it was not enough and Chester held on for the six-point decision.
Jordan Clendenin led Chester with 11 points, while Best finished with eight and Kristy Pulliam had six.
With the win, Chester advanced to the semifinals to take on Marissa-Coulterville Thursday night.
Marissa-Coulterville 56, Valmeyer 29
After a sluggish start in the first half, Marissa-Coulterville slowly pulled away in the second half for a 56-29 victory over Valmeyer Tuesday night.
The Lady Meteors made just 4-of-17 shots in the opening quarter and held a slim 10-8 advantage. Bailey Setzekorn and Abbie Lehmen each had four points in the first quarter to lead Marissa-Coulterville. Valmeyer had trouble from the start breaking Marissa-Coulterville’s press and finished the quarter with 10 turnovers.
Valmeyer opened the second frame with a 4-0 run to take its first and only lead of the game, 12-10 with 5:20 remaining in the first half.
The Lady Meteors answered with an 11-0 scoring run for a commanding 21-12 halftime lead. Setzekorn drained two long jumpers to pace the Marissa-Coulterville attack, while its defense forced Valmeyer to turn the ball over 10 more times in the quarter.
Marissa-Coulterville slowly began to pull away in the third quarter outscoring Valmeyer 18-10 for a 39-22 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Setzekorn and Christa Hill each had five points in the period, while Valmeyer, once again, turned the ball over 10 times.
The Lady Meteors wrapped up the victory in the fourth outscoring Valmeyer 17-7 for the 27-point decision.
Setzekorn finished with a game high 17 points while Lehman finished with 12 and Chelsea Weekley had 11 points.
Trico 35, New Athens 27
Trico outscored New Athens 21-14 in the second half for a 35-27 victory Monday night in the first round of the Chester girls basketball tournament.
The Lady pioneers led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter and held a 14-13 lead at the break.
Beth Daniels led all scorers with 18 points to lead Trico to the semifinals to take on Sesser-Valier, who knocked off Elverado 56-27.
