Johnston City pulls away in fourth quarter for 42-14 win over Elverado-Trico

Johnston City scored the game’s final 28 points to run away with a 42-14 victory over Elverado-Trico Friday night in Black Diamond Conference football action.
“The team played real well,” said Elverado-Trico coach Duffy Sanders. “We were able to move the ball up and down the field, but once we got in the red zone, we made stupid mistakes. But overall, I am real pleased with our effort and our performance.”
Johnston City struck first, scoring a touchdown just two minutes into the game. The Falcons answered right back just under five minutes later, as Herby Sandlin broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run to tie the game 6-6 with 5:26 to play in the first quarter.
Johnston City reclaimed the lead on their next play from scrimmage with a 57-yard touchdown run. They added the extra point, and with 5:12 to play in the opening quarter, Johnston City led 14-6.
Elverado-Trico evened up the score early in the second quarter with a Kyle Easton one-yard touchdown plunge. Randy Goetz ran in the two-point conversion, and with 11:57 to play in the first half, the game was tied at 14-14.
Johnston City put the game away by scoring 14 unanswered points in the second quarter and 14 more in the fourth quarter for the 28-point victory.
With the loss, Elverado-Trico fell to 0-3 on the season and in the conference, while Johnston City improved to 2-1.
Alex McGill led the Elverado-Trico attack as he ran the ball 17 times for 72 yards and completed 9-of-15 passes for 95 yards. Sandlin added 33 yards rushing, while Dalton Porter finished with 30 yards and Easton chipped in with 29 yards.
The Falcons travel to face Carterville (2-1) Friday night.
