The Elverado-Trico Falcons (0-1) played right with Fairfield (1-0) in the first half, but couldn’t keep up in the second half as they fell 47-6 Friday night in week one of the high school football season.
“We were down just 19-6 at half-time and trailed just 13-6 with a minute to play in the first half,” said Elverado-Trico coach Duffy Sanders. “We played a tough and very well in the first half. In the second half, we mentally wore down and the game just got away from us.”
Fairfield ran out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Falcons fought back as Randy Goetz scored on a six-yard touchdown run to trail just 13-6 with a minute to play in the first half.
Unfortunately for Elverado-Trico, The Mules added a late second quarter touchdown to steal back the momentum at half-time.
Fairfield carried the momentum over into the second half outscoring the Falcons 22-0 in the third quarter and 6-0 in the fourth for the 41-point win.
Goetz led the Elverado-Trico rushing attack with 41 yards on four carries with a touchdown. Kyle Easton had 35 yards on the ground on 15 carries and Dalton Porter added 12 yards on three attempts.
“Goetz and Easton both ran very well,” said Sanders. “They were hard to bring down and gave us a big boost.”
Elverado-Trico sophomore quarterback Alex McGill was 3-for-7 for 53 yards in his first varsity start.
“McGill did a good job running the offense for us in his first start,” said Sanders. “Our line just didn’t give him much time to pass the ball and you have to give Fairfield credit as well. They played at a much faster pace than we did and that is an issue we have to work on.”
The Falcons will travel to take on Sanders’ former team, Eldorado, Friday night.
