Red Bud holds off Carlyle for first win of the season ... 9/9/11



Behind three touchdowns from Tyler Hubert, the Red Bud Musketeers won their first game of the season by surprising Carlyle 37-33 Friday night.
The Musketeers took the early lead as new quarterback Alex Phegley called his own number from one yard out. Kevin Crafton added the extra point and Red Bud led 7-0  just 41 seconds into the game.
Just over three minutes later, Carlyle found the end zone for the first time with a 26-yard pass play from Jordan Smith to Karnealus Walker.
Kevin Crafton gave the Musketeers a 10-6 lead in the first quarter with a 22-yard field goal.
Carlyle’s Smith lit it up in the second quarter throwing for three touchdowns to give his team a lead. He connected with Zach Voss on a 58-yard score early in the quarter. He added touchdown throws of 47 and 65 yards to Walker as his team led 27-24 at the break.
Hubert scored his first of three touchdowns, a 13-yard run, in the second quarter. Phegley rounded out Red Bud’s scoring in the first half with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Musketeers took control of the game in the third quarter outscoring Carlyle 13-0 for a 37-27 advantage.
With 4:20 left in the quarter, Hubert scored from three yards out. Hubert brought in a pass from Phegley just under two minutes later for a 37-yard touchdown.
Walker scored the lone fourth quarter touchdown from one yard out for the final score of 37-33.
The Red Bud defense intercepted one pass and recovered four fumbles to help seal the win.
Hubert finished the game with 105 yards rushing on 20 carries. He also caught three passes for 69 yards. Phegley completed 7-of-10 passes for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
With the win, Red Bud improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Cahokia Conference. Friday night the Musketeers travel to take on Dupo (1-2).
