Edmund Jones has stepped down as head football coach for Sparta High School after just one year.
“I have done all that I can do here,” said Jones. “We have accomplished a lot here, maybe not in terms of wins and losses but I believe I have laid a good foundation. I think it is time to pass the baton to the next person.”
Jones, who is also the Dean of Students at Sparta, says his intentions are to stay at the school.
“We still have a school year to finish and that is where my priorities are,” said Jones. “Rebuilding a program is quite a challenge and it takes time to do. I think I gave it a good start, now it’s time for someone new to come on and take it from here.”
Jones told his team about his decision to step down after week eight’s loss to Pinckneyville. Assistant coach Joe Beavis called the offensive and defensive plays for Sparta Friday night against Red Bud, while Jones assisted from the sidelines.
