A one-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Jake Lochhead to Boyd Miles with just over three minutes left in the game proved to be the difference in Chester’s 33-32 win over Fairfield Friday night.
Chester opened the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Lochhead to Caleb Arbeiter for a 7-0 lead around five minutes into the game.
Fairfield answered back by scoring the next two touchdowns to claim a 16-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Stephen Roth came up big, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter, 15 and six-yard runs, to give his team a 20-16 halftime lead.
The Chester defense forced a fumble, and Tylor Brockhouse picked it up and returned it 42 yards for the touchdown. Chester led 27-16 with 7:47 left to play in the third.
Fairfield responded by scoring the next 16 points to reclaim the advantage 32-27 midway through the final quarter.
Facing a fourth-down-and-goal from the one-yard line, Miles pulled down the pass from Lochhead for the game winner.
Chester finished with 303 yards of total offense, 199 on the ground and 104 through the air.
Roth finished with 166 yards on 24 carries. Lochhead was 6-for-10 passing for 104 yards with one interception. Arbeiter had three receptions for 66 yards.
With the win, Chester improved to 3-5 and will travel to take on Hamilton County (1-7) Friday night.
