Panthers upset Carterville 30-22 ... 10/15/10


After falling behind 7-0, Pinckneyville scored 22 consecutive points and then held on late for a 30-22 upset win over Carterville Friday night.
Carterville grabbed the early lead with a five-yard touchdown run with under three minutes to play in the opening quarter.
Pinckneyville answered back with just 16 seconds left in the opening quarter as Bryant Shute connected with Adam Barczewski for a 21-yard touchdown pass, as the Panthers trailed 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
A J.D. Conner seven-yard touchdown run and a 14-yard touchdown pass from Shute to Marian Brammeier gave Pinckneyville a 22-7 lead at halftime.
The Panthers increased their lead to 30-7 early in the fourth quarter when Justin Hale scored on a 33-yard run.
Carterville tried to rally and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but couldn’t recover a late onside kick as Pinckneyville held on for the eight-point win.
Neil Kellerman  finished with 124 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Shute added 90 yards on the ground and completed 5-of-10 passes for 76 yards with an interception and two touchdowns.
The Panthers racked up 363 yards of total offense with 287 of that coming from the running game.
Carterville gained 233 yards on the ground and 57 through the air.
With the win, Pinckneyville improved to 3-5 overall and will travel to take on  Dupo (1-7) Friday night.
