Chester rolls over Carmi, improves to 2-0 ... 9/3/10

For the second week in a row, the Chester football Yellow Jackets took on one of the top teams of the Black Diamond Conference. And for the second week in a row, Chester pulled out an impressive victory. This past Friday it was a 36-0 blanking of Carmi-White County on the road.
“I think this game answered a lot of questions about this team,” said Chester coach Bryan Lee. “It answered the travel issue, and I think it proved to a lot of people that we are a pretty good team. This was a big win for us, and it gives us a lot of confidence moving ahead.”
The Chester defense controlled the powerful running attack of Carmi-White County, allowing just 100 yards on 26 carries.
The defense also scored the first eight points for the Yellow Jackets. John Baughman intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to give his squad a 6-0 lead in the first minute of play.
Early in the second quarter, Chester recorded a safety as Carmi snapped the ball out of the end zone, pushing the Yellow Jackets lead to 8-0.
Chester added to its lead  seven minutes later when Stephen Roth scored from one yard out. Seth Johnson added the extra point, as the Yellow Jackets held a 15-0 at the intermission.
The Yellow Jacket offense remained in rhythm for their first drive of the second half, and Roth capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Johnson added the extra point, and Chester’s lead was 22-0 with 8:23 to play in the third quarter.
On the final play of the third quarter, Zane Wallace scored his first varsity touchdown on a five-yard touchdown run. Johnson added the extra point, as Chester increased its lead to 29-0.
Baughman scored from 13 yards with 8:49 left in the game  to round out the scoring for Chester.
“It took us awhile to get the offense going, but once it did, the flood gates opened up,” said Lee. “We were able to control the clock in the second half and really limit Carmi’s chance for a comeback.”
Roth led the Chester rushing attack with 92 yards on 10 carries. Wallace finished with 64 yards, while Clint Cole added 52 yards.
Zach Lochhead was 1-for-3 passing for 63 yards. Cole pulled down the team’s lone reception for 63 yards. That lone completion went to Clint Cole.
Defensively for the Jackets, Danny Roth finished with five solo tackles and four assists to lead the team. Baughman had five solo tackles and a quarterback sack, while Justin Woodward finished with three solo tackles.
Chester (2-0) will host Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton (0-2) Friday night.
