Pinckneyville 6
Sparta 2
Pinckneyville scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning to knock off Sparta 6-2 in a key SIRR Mississippi Division battle.
Senior Drew Dudek did it all for the Panthers. He pitched all 10 innings allowing two runs on just five hits while striking out 10. He also went 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored.
“What a gutsy dominant performance by Drew Dudek,” said Pinckneyville coach Alan Engelhardt. “He did a great job of keeping his pitch count down so we could keep trotting him out there, and our defense started to make plays behind him.”
Sparta scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the first lead of the game as Kyle Wall and Zach Ferguson each picked up an RBI.
The Panthers scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game.
In the 11th inning, Bryant Shute hit a triple to help Pinckneyville score four runs and escape with the win.
“Offensively, we were again way too passive,” said Engelhardt. “We got several base runners, but then we took terrible swings in a lot of key situations. Finally in the seventh, Drew and Landon Chandler both came up big with back-to-back extra base hits. And in the eleventh inning, Bryant Shute had a big triple down the line to finally put us on top. It is always hard to go on the road and win in this conference, so it was really big for us to steal another one on the road to help us keep pace.”
Chris Theobald picked up the loss in relief of starter Jordan Thompson. Theobald gave up four runs on four hits in two innings of work, while Thompson tossed nine innings allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
Shute was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for Pinckneyville, while Thompson and Josh Loyd were both 2-for-4 for Sparta.
Pinckneyville improved to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Sparta fell to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Pinckneyville 6
Du Quoin 5
Pinckneyville rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning to slip past Du Quoin 6-5 Friday in a battle of Perry County rivals.
“It was good to see us show some heart and battle back at the end of the game today,” said Pinckneyville coach Alan Engelhardt. “Give the Du Quoin pitcher a lot of credit; he is good, but we were chasing his stuff out of the zone early in the game. In the fifth inning, I thought we finally adjusted and had a lot better approach at the plate, getting pitches down that we could drive. And finally, Landon Chandler came up with the big hit with the bases loaded to win it for us. C.J. Opp did a good job of battling on the mound today. Our defense didn’t play exceptionally well today and forced him to throw a lot of extra pitches and pitch out of a lot of jams, but he limited the damage and kept us in the game. This was a big game to keep us in the conference hunt and gets us started on a busy weekend.”
Du Quoin scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added another run in the forth for a 3-0 lead.
Pinckneyville battled back with three runs in the fifth to tie the game up at 3-3.
Du Quoin reclaimed the lead by scoring two runs in the next half inning, before the Panthers rallied in the seventh for the come-from-behind victory.
Taylor Beninati tossed one inning allowing no runs on a hit to notch the win in relief of C.J. Opp who went six innings allowing five runs on 14 hits while striking out six.
Chandler led the Pinckneyville offense with two hits and three runs batted in while Opp had a hit and drove in two runs and Christian Shopinski finished 2-for-3.
The Panthers improved to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Marissa-Coulterville 13
Dupo 3

Logan Tabor earned the win as he tossed five innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. He was also 2-for-3 from the plate with a couple of runs batted in.
Casey Pitchford led the Marissa-Coulterville offense with three runs batted in while Kevin Galle went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
