Teutopolis slows down Pinckneyville in Duster Thomas Hoops Classic ... 12/27/11



 A cold shooting night and an overpowering rebounding attack by Teutopolis led to Pinckneyville suffering its first loss of the 5th annual Duster Thomas Hoops Classic Tuesday night, 53-39.
“Teutopolis has a lot of athletes and we didn’t get into good rebounding position,” said Pinckneyville coach Bob Waggoner. “We missed a lot of close shots early and I think we got timid after that.”
The Panthers made just two field goals in the first quarter but made up for that by scoring nine points from the free throw line. Hunter Queen was a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe in the opening quarter and had 10 early points after the first eight minutes to help his team to a 13-12 lead.
The lead wouldn’t last long, as the Wooden Shoes scored the first 11 points of the second quarter. Pinckneyville was outscored 15-3 in the period and trailed 27-16 at the half. The Panthers were 1-of-9 from the field in the quarter. In the first half, Pinckneyville was out-rebounded 20-5 and Teutopolis converted offensive rebounds into 10 second chance points.
Teutopolis came out in the second half and scored on its first four possessions to increase its lead to 16, 34-18.
Pinckneyville got back in the game by finishing the third quarter with a 9-0 run as Payton Nippe scored six points in the frame.
After three quarters of play, Pinckneyville trailed 34-27.
Teutopolis used a 14-3 run early in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 14-point victory, 53-39. The Panthers did make four three-pointers in the quarter but were still outscored 19-12.
Teutopolis improved to 2-0 in tournament play, while Pinckneyville dropped to 1-1.
Nippe finished with 13 points to lead the Panthers, while Queen had 10.
In other tournament action:
Red Bud 64 OT, Steeleville 62
Red Bud made 9-of-10 free throws in overtime to sneak past Steeleville 64-62 Tuesday night. The Warriors were just 2-of-7 from the line in the overtime session.
Steeleville ran out to a 17-8 first quarter lead and held a 25-18 halftime advantage.
Red Bud took over in the third, outscoring Steeleville 24-12 for a 42-37 lead heading into the fourth.
The Warriors were able to fight back and tie the game in the final seconds on a Kyle Smith three-pointer, forcing the extra session.
Alex Phegley, Jacob Kueker, Jordan Schneider and Garett Salger all had 14 points for the Musketeers.
Darin Winkelman had the big game for Steeleville with 21 points, while Steven Uchtman had 16 and Jacob Combs added 10.
Red Bud improved to 1-1 in tournament play, while Steeleville dropped to 0-2.
Teutopolis 88, Steeleville 20
Steeleville fell behind big early and decided to rest its starters in a lopsided 88-20 loss to Teutopolis Tuesday.
The Warriors trailed 22-3 in the first quarter and were down 41-10 at halftime.
Teutopolis went on to outscore Steeleville 21-3 in the third and 26-7 in the fourth.
Jacob Combs led Steeleville with five points, while Kyle Smith added four. The Warriors were out-rebounded 43-10 in the game.
Pinckneyville 53, Red Bud 49
Pinckneyville shot better than 50 percent in a close 53-49 win over Red Bud Tuesday morning.
The Musketeers led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Pinckneyville battled back to take a 29-24 lead at the break.
The Panthers increased their lead in the third, outscoring Red Bud 14-9.
The Musketeers fought back in the fourth, outscoring Pinckneyville 16-10, but it was not enough as Pinckneyville held on for the win.
Chris Priebe led the Panthers with 14 points, while Bryant Shute added 11.
Garett Salger paced Red Bud with 18 points, while Jacob Kueker finished with 14.
