Sparta advances to Sesser-Valier semifinals with win over New Athens ... 12/28/09


 

Sparta advanced to the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament semifinals with a six-point win over New Athens, while Chester notched its first win of the tournament and Marissa-Coulterville fell to host and tournament top seed Sesser-Valier in the quarterfinals Monday.
Sesser-Valier 62
Marissa-Coulterville 47
Sesser-Valier ran out to a 21-point lead in the first half and never looked back in a 62-47 victory over Marissa-Coulterville Monday night.
The Meteors trailed 22-6 in the first quarter and were down 39-18 at the intermission.
Marissa-Coulterville did outscore Sesser-Valier 29-23 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
Dave Parkinson scored 15 points to lead the Meteors, while Mike Lloyd added nine in the loss.
With the loss, Marissa-Coulterville dropped down to the fifth place bracket to take on New Athens Tuesday evening.
Sparta 59
New Athens 53
With the 59-53 win over New Athens Monday night, Sparta advanced to the tournament semifinals to take on host and top seed Sesser-Valier Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to steal the win.
Chester 95 (OT)
Vienna 87
Chester had five players reach double figures in scoring in its 95-87 overtime win over Vienna Monday in the consolation bracket of the Sesser-Valier tournament.
Junior guard Zach Lochhead led the Yellow Jacket offense with 35 points, while Jeremy Woodward had 16 points, MJ Hamilton added 15, Matt Chandler finished with 14 and Aaron Grah tossed in 10.
Each team scored 16 points in the first quarter, but Chester grabbed a 35-31 halftime lead.
The Jackets outscored Vienna 22-11 in the third, but the Eagles fought back to outscore Chester 33-19 in the fourth to force overtime.
In the overtime session, Chester outscored Vienna 19-12 for the win.
With the win, Chester advanced to take to Century Tuesday night.
