Sparta, Marissa-Coulterville pick up opening round wins, Chester falls to New Athens ... 12/26/09


 

In the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament, Sparta and Marissa-Coulterville both picked up first round wins Friday, while Chester fell to New Athens.
Marissa-Coulterville 58
Century 54
Marissa-Coulterville rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to edge out Century, the tournament’s eight seed, 58-54.
The Meteors fell behind 18-9 in the first quarter and trailed 33-23 at the intermission.
Marissa-Coulterville regrouped in the second half to outscore Century 17-9 in the third and 18-12 in the fourth for the four-point win.
Cody Mahan led the Meteors with 13 points, while Casey Pitchford and Joey Martin each added 11 in the win.
With the win, Marissa-Coulterville advanced to take on the tournament’s top seed and host Sesser-Valier Monday night.
Sparta 59
Vienna 30
Sparta had little trouble with Vienna in the opening round, as the Bulldogs rolled to a 59-30 victory.
Sparta ran out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter and held a commanding 29-12 halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs would go on to outscore Vienna 11-8 in the third and 19-10 in the fourth for the 29-point victory.
David Sams scored 14 points to lead Sparta, while London Oliver added 11.
With the victory, Sparta advanced to take on New Athens Monday evening.
New Athens 53
Chester 42
New Athens outscored Chester in each of the first three quarters to build up a 19-point lead and coast to a 53-42 win.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and were down 28-18 at halftime.
New Athens outscored Chester 20-11 in the third for a commanding 48-29 advantage heading into the fourth.
Chester outscored New Athens 13-5 in the fourth, but it was not nearly enough to rally from the early deficit.
Zach Lochhead led Chester with 12 points, while Aaron Grah added 11.
With the loss, Chester fell into the consolation bracket where the team faced Vienna Monday afternoon.
