Sparta rallied for a win in the fourth quarter, while Trico’s late rally felt short against Waterloo during the opening night of the Sparta Mid-Winter Classic Tuesday night.
Waterloo 53, Trico 47
Trico outscored Waterloo 23-12 in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome a large early deficit in a 53-47 loss to Waterloo.
The Pioneers fell behind 16-12 in the first quarter and were down 29-16 at the break. Waterloo increased its advantage to 41-24 heading into the final quarter.
Daron Meyerhoff scored 22 points to lead the Pioneers, while Dylan Witthoft had 14.
Sparta 55, Steeleville 50
Sparta overcame a four-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Steeleville 55-50.
The Bulldogs led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, Steeleville led 22-21. The Warriors outscored Sparta 17-14 in the third quarter to lead 39-35.
Aaron Rushing led Sparta with 22 points, while Jacob Combs had 14 for Steeleville. Reid Wilson added 11 points in the loss.
In other tournament action, Murphysboro defeated Cairo.
