Boys roundup - Panthers suffer first loss, Red Bud notches two conference wins ... 12/20/11



Red Bud 46, Columbia 35
Jacob Kueker scored a game-high 24 points to lead Red Bud to a 46-35 win over Columbia Tuesday night.
The Musketeers grabbed a 14-10 lead in the first quarter and held a 24-16 advantage at the half. In a close second half, the Musketeers outscored Columbia 22-19 for the 11-point win.
With the win, Red Bud improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Cahokia Conference Mississippi Division.
Herrin 54, Pinckneyville 42
Herrin overcame a two-point first quarter deficit to hand Pinckneyville its first loss of the season 54-42 Saturday night.
The Panthers led 13-11 at the end of the opening quarter but were outscored 43-29 the rest of the way. Hunter Queen was the lone Pinckneyville player to reach double figures in scoring with 14 points. Payton Nippe added eight in the loss.

Murphysboro 67, Sparta 41
Sparta dropped to 2-7 on the season following a 67-41 loss to Murphysboro Saturday night.
Murphy outscored the Bulldogs in every quarter en route to the 26-point win.
Sparta trailed 18-11 at the end of the opening quarter and 37-17 at halftime.
In the second half, Murphysboro out-pointed Sparta 13-9 and 17-15.
Devante Garrett led Sparta with 11 points, while Aaron Rushing and Dalton Robert each had nine in the loss.
Pierre House scored 21 to lead the Red Devils.
Trico 53, Chester 16
After tasting defeat for the first time this season in the SIU Shootout, Trico got some payback on its next time out with a 53-16 blowout of Chester Friday night.
The Pioneer defense held Chester to just six points in the first half.
Trico led 23-4 at the end of the first quarter and 35-6 at the half. The Pioneers outscored Chester 18-10 in the second half to run away with the 37-point win.
Dylan Witthoft led all scorers with 10 points, and Chase Heins had nine.
For Chester, Link Cushman led the way with six points.
Red Bud 53, Wesclin 45
Red Bud used a strong second half to knock off Wesclin 53-45 Friday night.
The Musketeers led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter and held a slim 24-23 lead at the break.
In the second half, Red Bud outscored Wesclin 13-9 and 16-13 to seal the eight-point win.
A balanced scoring attack led Red Bud as Garrett Salger led the way with 15 points followed by Jordan Schneider with 14 and Jacob Kueker with 12.
Red Bud improved to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Du Quoin 46, Sparta 23
Du Quoin outscored Sparta in every quarter for a 46-23 victory Friday night.
The Bulldogs trailed 9-2 after the first quarter and 22-8 at the break. Du Quoin pulled away in the second half, outscoring Sparta 13-10 and 11-5 for the 23-point win.
Aaron Rushing led Sparta with eight points, while Devante Garrett had six.
Brenden Fred had 11 points and Brandon Williams had 10 to lead Du Quoin.
Okawville 72, Steeleville 41
Okawville showed Steeleville Friday night why many consider them the top 1A team in southern Illinois. The Rockets outscored Steeleville 32-15 in the first half to roll to a 72-41 victory.
Reid Wilson led the Warriors with 11 points, while Jacob Combs and Darin Winkelman each had 10.
Taylor Walton finished with 19 points to lead Okawville.
Gibault 61, Marissa-Coulterville 33
Gibault jumped out to a 29-15 first half lead and never slowed down in a 61-33 victory over Marissa-Coulterville Friday.
Joey Smith led the Meteors with 11 points, while Austin Place added 10.
John Pratl led Gibault with 19 points.
