Chester wins Black Diamond Conference opener ... 12/7/10


Chester 70, Zeigler-Royalton 51
In their Black Diamond Conference debut, the Chester Yellow Jackets outscored Zeigler-Royalton in every quarter en route to a 70-51 win at home Tuesday night.
The Jackets led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 40-28 at halftime. In the second half Chester outscored the Tornadoes 13-12 and 17-11 for the 19-point win.
Zach Lochhead finished with 17 points to lead Chester. Justin Woodward and Matt Chandler each added 14 points in the win.
Chester improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play following the victory.
Carterville 61, Chester 44
Chester finished up play in the Murphysboro eighth annual Ernie Bozarth Memorial Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament with a 61-44 loss to Carterville Saturday.
With the game tied up at halftime 23-23, Caterville outscored the Yellow Jackets 19-10 in the third and 19-11 in the fourth.
Zach Lochhead finished with a team-high  13 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Matt Heberlie added 11 points for Chester in the loss.
With the loss, Chester finished up tournament play with a record of 1-3.
Carterville was paced by Ryan Bonifield with 15 points and Drew Bonner 14 points.
Gibault 52, Pinckneyville 36
Pinckneyville was outscored in every quarter Friday night in a 52-36 loss to Gibault. It was the first loss of the season for the Panthers.
Pinckneyville trailed 10-6 in the first and 25-17 at halftime. Gibault put the game away in the second half outscoring Pinckneyville 12-11 in the third and 15-8 in the fourth.
Kyle Lamb led Pinckneyville with 15 points.
With the loss, Pinckneyville dropped to 1-1.
New Athens 46, Marissa-Coulterville 39
Marissa-Coulterville dropped its fifth consecutive game to start the season after falling to New Athens 46-39 in the Okawville tournament Friday night.
The Meteors trailed 11-3 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied back outscoring New Athens 16-8 in the second to tie the game up at 19-19 by halftime.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets outscored Marissa 11-7 in the third and 16-13 in the fourth for the seven-point margin.
Clint Runyon nailed three three-pointers and finished with 16 points to lead the Meteors. Austin Place added 10 points, while Logan Tabor had seven.
Vince Kiefer scored 16  and Adam Ingles added 11 to pace New Athens.
Marissa-Coulterville finished tournament play at 0-4, while New Athens went 2-2.
Gateway Tech 78, Chester 67
Chester fell to Gateway Tech out of St. Louis 78-67 Friday night despite getting 34 points from senior guard Zach Lochhead.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 23-12 at the end of the first quarter and 46-29 at halftime.
Chester was able to get back in the game in the third quarter outscoring the Jaguars 12-6 to trail only 52-41 heading into the final quarter.
In what turned out to be a frantic fourth quarter, the two teams combined to score 52 points.
Gateway Tech was just 9-of-27 from the foul line in the quarter and the Jackets were able to cut the lead down to three with about a minute to play.
However, that would be as close as Chester would get as Gateway Tech held on for the 78-67 win.
Justin Woodward added 13 points for Chester, while Matt Chandler had 12.
With the loss, Chester dropped to 1-2 in the eighth annual Ernie Bozarth Memorial Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament
Woodlawn 49, Marissa-Coulterville 30
Woodlawn outscored Marissa-Coulterville in every quarter for a 49-30 victory Thursday in the Okawville tournament.
Woodlawn improved to 3-0 in the tournament with the win, while Marissa-Coulterville dropped to 0-3 in the tournament and 0-4 on the season.
The Meteors trailed 8-4 in the first quarter and 21-10 at halftime.
Kevin Galle led Marissa-Coulterville with eight points, while Logan Tabor added seven.
Dawson Verhines scored a game-high 12 points for Woodlawn.
