Pinckneyville Panthers win one, lose two ... 12/21/10


Du Quoin 61, Pinckneyville 51
Du Quoin outscored Pinckneyville 27-17 in the second half for a 61-51 victory Tuesday night in SIRR Mississippi boys basketball action.
Du Quoin improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while Pinckneyville dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
The Panthers led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but Du Quoin battled back to tie the game 34-34 at the intermission.
The Indians took control in the second half outscoring Pinckneyville 12-6 in the third and 15-11 in the fourth.
Kyle Lamb led the Panthers with 15 points, while Steven Brueggemann added 12.
Connor Wheeler finished with 18 points to pace Du Quoin, while J.C. Davis added 11.
Columbia 49, Red Bud 46
Adam Kunkel scored 20 points for the Musketeers Tuesday night, but it was not enough as Columbia held on for a 49-46 victory.
The Musketeers led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 23-19 at the intermission.
Red Bud cut the deficit to  one-point, 33-32, after outscoring the Eagles 13-10 in the third.
Columbia held on for the tight win by outscoring Red Bud 16-14 over the final eight minutes.
Jacob Kueker and Alex Phegley each had eight points for the Musketeers, which dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Cahokia Conference.
Columbia was led by Bryce Bastien with 21 points and Taylor O’Connor with 15.
Trico 80, Elverado 28
Trico improved to 8-0 with a 80-28 blowout-win over Elverado Saturday night.
The Pioneers outscored Elverado in every quarter including 46-15 in the second half for the 52-point decision.
Trico led 15-5 at the end of the first quarter and 34-13 at halftime.
Chase Heins finished with 17 points to lead the Pioneers, while Taylor Pyatt added 11 in the win.
Murphysboro 71, Sparta 46
Murphysboro ran out to a big first half lead and coasted to a 71-46 victory over Sparta Saturday.
The Bulldogs trailed 23-12 at the end of the first quarter and 38-18 at the break.
The Red Devils sealed the win in the second half by outscoring Sparta 33-28.
Jordan Thompson and Aaron Rushing each had nine points to lead Sparta.
With the loss, Sparta dropped to 3-7 on the season. Murphysboro improved to 9-0.
Pinckneyville 53, Herrin 50
Kyle Lamb went 4-for-4 from the foul line late in the game to lead Pinckneyville past Herrin 53-50 Saturday night.
Lamb finished with a game-high 22 points as Pinckneyville improved to 3-3 on the season, while Herrin dropped to 1-8.
The Panthers led 16-8 in the first and held a 33-25 halftime advantage. Herrin fought back to outscore Pinckneyville 17-8 in the third for a 42-41 lead heading into the fourth.
Steven Brueggemann finished with 16 points in the win.
Sparta 61, Anna-Jonesboro 56
Sparta notched its first conference win of the season by holding off Anna-Jonesboro on the road 61-56 Friday night.
The Bulldos raced out to a 22-15 lead in the first quarter, and held a 35-22 halftime advantage.
The large halftime lead didn’t last for long as AJ outscored the Bulldogs 16-11 in the third and 18-15 in the fourth. However, it was not enough for the win, as Sparta held on for the slim five-point decision.
Austin Peck led a balanced Sparta attack with 15 points, while Jordan Thompson had 13, London Oliver 12 and Weslen Kiner 10.
Sparta improved to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the SIRR Mississippi Division.
Nashville 41, Pinckneyville 29
Nashville remained unbeaten with a 41-29 victory over Pinckneyville Friday night in Thomas Gymnasium.
The Panthers trailed 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and 21-17 at halftime. Nashville pulled away in the second half outscoring Pinckneyville 9-4 in the third and 11-8 in the fourth for the 12-point decision.
Kyle Lamb led all Pinckneyville scorers with 10 points, while Steven Brueggemann added six.
Pinckneyville dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SIRR Mississippi Division.
Nashville improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
