Steeleville jumped all over Shawnee and Trico outlasted Red Bud Wednesday to become the only two undefeated teams remaining in the Trico Pioneer Invitational Tournament. The Warriors and Pioneers will do battle Friday night at 7.
Trico 61, Red Bud 46
In a battle of the past two Trico Pioneer Invitational champions, Trico pulled away from Red Bud late for a 61-46 victory in the nightcap Wednesday.
The game was tied at 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Trico would go on to outscore the Musketeers 15-13 in the second, 20-13 in the third and 18-12 in the fourth for the 15-point win.
Trico big man Chase Heins led the Pioneers with 18 points, while Jesse Smith added 15 and Tyler Coleman had 11.
Adam Kunkel and Alex Phegley each had 13 to pace the Red Bud attack.
With the win, Trico improved to 2-0 in the tournament, while Red Bud dropped to 1-1.
Egyptian 74, Sparta 58
Sparta fell behind by double digits in the first quarter and couldn’t dig out of the early hole in a 74-58 loss to Egyptian Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs trailed 18-8 at the end of the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime.
The Pharaohs would go on to outscore Sparta 19-18 in the third and 20-15 in the fourth for the 16-point win.
Jhermarien Terry led Egyptian with 22 points.
The Bulldogs offense was led by Austin Peck with 19 points and Weslen Kiner with 14.
The loss was Sparta’s third in a row as the team dropped to 0-2 in tournament play and 1-3 on the season.
Steeleville 65, Shawnee 32
Steeleville improved to 2-0 in tournament play by outscoring Shawnee in every quarter, including 32-15 in the second half, for a 65-32 win Wednesday evening.
The Warriors jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first, and held a 33-17 advantage at halftime.
Steeleville put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Redskins 22-12 in the third and 10-3 in the fourth.
Coire Reel finished with 18 points to lead the Steeleville offense. Colin Smith added 13 in the win, while Joey Wittenbrink had 12.
With the win, Steeleville improved to 3-0 overall.
