In a battle of two of the region’s top baseball teams, it was the Class 1A underdog Marissa-Coulterville Meteors that knocked off the Class 2A Du Quoin Indians 8-4 Friday.
The Meteors exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take control of the game. They added their final run in the sixth.
Du Quoin regrouped to score two runs in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t come back from the large deficit.
Chris Fullerton pitched all seven innings for Marissa-Coulterville, allowing just four runs, only two earned, on seven hits while striking out 11 for the win.
David Parkinson led the Meteor offense going 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in. Logan Tabor also had a home run in the game. Kyle Sinn drove in two runs, while Fullerton helped his own cause with an RBI.
The Meteors improved to 22-4 on the season with the win.
