“In the second game, we once again pitched well, getting six very good innings from Matthew Nichols and a solid seventh from Joey Burris,” said Pinckneyville coach Alan Engelhardt. “We didn't have as good of a game hitting the ball, but we found a way to score runs against a very good pitcher, and the bottom of our order really came through, with Taylor Beninati knocking in two of the runs today.”
Pinckneyville grabbed the early leads, scoring alone run in the bottom of the second inning. Goreville tied the game with a single run in the fourth. The Panthers reclaimed the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth. Goreville scored a run in the seventh put couldn’t get any closer.
“Joey Burris really had a nice day, banging out four hits, and Beninati had three of his own,” said Engelhardt. “I was also really pleased with Dylan Hardin, although the stats will show that he was 1 for 6, he did the little things and successfully moved runners forward four times. Because he was willing to give himself up to move runners, we ended up scoring on all four of those occasions. Doing little things like that are how teams get onto winning streaks.”
With the win, Pinckneyville improved to 9-3 on the season.
Pinckneyville 14, Goreville 0
Pinckneyville exploded for 10 runs in the third inning to coast to a 14-0 win over Goreville in game one of a double header Saturday.

In a game like this, mistakes are really magnified. Both Du Quoin runs were scored as a result of our errors, and we gave up a couple runs that we could have scored because of poor base running.”
The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Du Quoin battled back with a run in the fourth and another one in the seventh to force extra innings.
Pinckneyville finished the game with four runs on five hits with five errors, while Du Quoin had two runs on two hits with five errors.
“I was really pleased to see us keep our heads up even though we didn't finish the seventh inning the way we would have liked to,” added Engelhardt. “That was a big step forward.”
