Rend Lake College head baseball coach Tony Etnier sees a lot of promise in Matt Bunselmeyer, a senior pitcher at Trico High School who recently signed to play as a Warrior next fall. But, he's going to have to work.
A daily schedule of curveballs, off-speed pitches and weights will be the 6’2 170-pound lefty from Campbell Hill.
“I thought I worked out a lot at Cobden,” Bunselmeyer joked. “I'm excited that Rend Lake has interest in me. I'm ready to play.”
The son of Scott and Carla Bunselmeyer said he wants to major in agriculture business and management at Rend Lake.
“It's every father's dream," Scott said. “Rend Lake will be a great place for him to mature and pick up some good coaching.”
In addition to pitching, Bunselmeyer played outfield for Trico coach Josh Higgerson. He was named to the Black Diamond all-conference team and was selected as the offensive player of the year in 2010.
He also played with the Southern Illinois Hustlers summer league team.
According to Etnier, Bunselmeyer was hitting the low-to-mid-80s with his fastball when he recruited him. He added that while there is a lot of potential with the 18-year-old, Etnier and assistant coaches Larry Bosik and Todd Weaver will have to focus on mechanics and strength training to maximize Bunselmeyer's abilities.
