Sparta, Steeleville and Trico get past quarterfinal round ... 5/18/10


In regional baseball action, Sparta, Steeleville and Trico all picked up quarterfinal wins while Chester’s season came to an end.
Sparta 2
Waltonville 1

Austin Peck drove in the game winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Sparta edged Waltonville 2-1 Tuesday to advance to the Nashville 2A Baseball Regional semifinals.
Jordan Thompson got the best of a pitcher’s duel as he pitched all eight innings allowing just one run on four hits as his record for the season improved to 6-1.
Waltonville took the first lead of the game with a run in the top of the fourth inning, but Dillon Blind tied things up with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Blind was 2-for-4 on the day with the home run and a double.
With the victory, Sparta improved to 12-10 on the season and advanced to the regional semifinals against top-seeded Du Quoin on Wednesday.
Steeleville 3
Elverado 1

Steeleville scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game right from the start in a 3-1 win over Elverado Monday in the quarterfinal round of the Okawville 1A Baseball Regional.
Dustin Risinger earned the win as he tossed all seven innings allowing just one run on two hits.
The offense was paced by Andrew Pokrzywinski (2-for-4 with an RBI) and Kris Beshears (1-for-2 with a double and an RBI). Nick Potter and Risinger also each had a hit in the win.
With the win, Steeleville improved to 8-18 on the season and advanced to the regional semifinals against top-seeded Marissa-Coulterville on Wednesday.
In other baseball action, Trico advanced past the quarterfinal round in the Trico 1A Regional with an explosive 24-14 win over Eldorado Monday. With the win, the Pioneers advanced to take on top-seeded Goreville Wednesday.
Gibault ended Chester’s season with a 2-1 decision Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of Red Bud 2A Regional. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets finished play with a record of 7-21
